About the destination: Lima is the capital and largest city of Peru. While many people use Lima as a gateway to Cuzco, Arequipa, or the Amazon, Lima, also known as the City of the Kings, has much to offer visitors. It's a city rich in historical sites, monumental colonial architecture, and old-world charm. The Plaza Mayor or Plaza de Armas is located in the heart of Lima's Historic Centre and is surrounded by major tourist attractions such as the Cathedral, the Archbishop Palace, and the Government Palace. At the center of the square is a fountain with a bronze statue. Jirón de la Unión, a pedestrian street that links the Plaza de Armas and Plaza San Martín, was once a prominent street where aristocrats resided. Today, it's primarily a shopping street, but as you stroll along, you'll see many beautiful colonial buildings with wooden balconies and ornate grilled windows. Lima is a city closely connected to the ocean. The Costera promenade, which runs along the city's coastline, is filled with numerous restaurants and cafes. Lima is also the best place to sample the diverse Peruvian cuisine, which incorporates a wide range of ingredients from the coast, mountains, and Amazon regions. Despite its size and chaos, Lima, with its stunning sights, delicious food, and friendly locals, is definitely worth a visit.

2. Trujillo
Stay
About the destination: Trujillo is a bustling metropolis located on the northern coast of Peru. Known for its friendly atmosphere and colonial charm, Trujillo is a major economic and cultural hub in northern Peru. Close to the city, you can discover numerous impressive archaeological monuments from the Mochica and Chimú cultures, including the remarkable Chan Chan citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Trujillo boasts rich colonial architecture and a wealth of archaeological, historical sites, and museums. The city's main square, the Plaza de Armas, is one of the largest in Peru, and near it stands the stunning Trujillo Cathedral. The beaches near Trujillo, such as Huanchaco, are perfect not only for their delicious local seafood and refreshing sea breezes, but also for their wide range of adventure sports and local charm. Huanchaco is a scenic fishing cove where you can see the ancient craft depicted on Mochica pottery and friezes at Chan Chan. While Trujillo is often overshadowed by other destinations in Peru, it has much to offer, including nearby ruins, a cosmopolitan yet manageable city vibe, and easy access to nearby beaches and ruins. It provides a pleasant detour and, in many ways, a more authentic Peruvian experience.

3. Cusco
Stay
About the destination: Cuzco, situated in the Southern Sierras, is among the most frequented cities in Peru. It was formerly the capital of the Inca dynasty and currently serves as the entryway to the Sacred Valley and the Andean capital of Peru. Cuzco radiates charm and magnificence, and it is brimming with character. The heart of Cuzco is the Plaza de Armas, where you can discover the Cathedral and the Compañía de Jesús church, among other notable structures. The city's architecture is an intriguing blend of Spanish Colonial built on Inca ruins, and everything else is a distinctive fusion of Spanish and indigenous influences. Wandering through Cuzco’s picturesque, narrow, cobblestone streets is a source of endless fascination. Cuzco is a constant connection to the past, its streets are filled with vibrant costumes, handicraft shops, impressive Incan ruins, and local flair is omnipresent. Hatunrumiyoc is situated near Plaza de Nazarenas, not far from Plaza de Armas. It is a narrow pedestrian street, renowned for its Inca walls where massive stones are precisely carved to fit together without mud or concrete. You’ll find the masterpiece, a 12-angled stone, about halfway down the street. Cuzco is the most convenient city from which tourists can start visits to Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley of the Incas, and other Inca sites in the region. The city’s incredible architecture and the awe-inspiring natural surroundings make Cusco a city hard to leave.

4. Arequipa
Stay
About the destination: Arequipa is a city in the Southern Coastal region of Peru. Situated in a valley next to the Chili River and encircled by snow-capped peaks like the Misti Volcano, and the Chachani and Pichu Pichu Mountains, it is the second largest city in Peru. Known as "the white city" due to the abundance of buildings constructed from a light-colored volcanic rock called sillar, Arequipa not only shines in its sunny, dry climate but also sits majestically among the spectacular volcanoes that serve as its backdrop. With a collection of beautiful colonial buildings, a delightful tropical main square, and excellent local food specialties, even the most casual visitor can stay occupied for several days. Add to this a sprawling, vibrant convent complex, the archaeological marvel of Juanita, and a bustling local produce market, and it becomes one of Peru's most memorable cities. Lastly, its close proximity to natural wonders like the Colca Canyon and the Valley of Volcanoes quickly makes it one of the must-visit cities in all of South America. Arequipa is and should be a destination in its own right.

This small port town caters to tourism and serves as the starting point for tours to the Islas Ballestas and the Paracas National Reservation. The beautiful Paracas Bay, protected by the Paracas Peninsula, provides a break from ocean waves in its shallow, warmer waters, allowing life to thrive, especially near its southwestern edge within the Paracas National Reserve. The Paracas Museum, located near the southwestern edge of Paracas Bay, offers valuable information about the Paracas culture and the many unique species, particularly the birds of Paracas.
