Stay
About the destination: The Riviera Maya is a tourist and resort area in Mexico. It spans the coastal Highway along the Caribbean coast of the state of Quintana Roo, situated on the eastern part of the Yucatán Peninsula. Historically, this district began at the city of Playa del Carmen and ended at the village of Tulum. Areas targeted for urban development include the towns and villages of: Puerto Morelos, the Riviera Maya, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal, Chemuyil, and Tulum. A key attraction throughout the Riviera Maya are coastal and reef water activities that rely on the coastal waters and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, which starts near Cancun and extends along the entire length of the Riviera Maya, continuing south to Guatemala. This barrier reef system is the second longest in the world. Activities at the most frequented locations include jet-skiing, snorkeling, scuba diving, swimming in cenotes, swimming with dolphins, zip-lining, horseback riding, sailing, and guided jungle tours. Archaeology is also a major tourist attraction in the area, including the popular archaeological sites managed by the National Institute of Archaeology such as Tulum on the coast, and Chichen Itza and Coba located some distance inland.

About the destination: Chichén Itzá is the most famous archaeological site of Mayan culture, recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and one of the "Seven New Wonders of the World." The site spans an area of 6.5 square kilometers and can be explored in a single day. The most impressive views and structures in Chichén Itzá are located in the central area. Here, you will find the Ballgame court, various platforms, temples, and the spectacular Castle (Pyramid of Kukulkan), a massive 25-meter stone structure that represents the Mayan calendar. Each year, during the spring and fall equinoxes, the sun creates the illusion of a serpent ascending or descending the steps of the Pyramid of Kukulkan, a remarkable phenomenon that draws large crowds. This illusion is also recreated in a sound and light show that takes place every night at the archaeological site. You can visit Chichén Itzá on a day trip or choose to stay overnight at the nearby Hacienda Chichen, a beautifully restored 16th-century estate that has been transformed into a luxury hotel and spa.

About the destination: Mérida is the capital city of the Mexican state of Yucatan. This captivating and lively city is heavily influenced by Spanish colonial culture. Mérida has a unique ambiance, particularly on weekends when the central streets are closed for music and dancing in the main square. The entire city seems to converge downtown for the celebration. It also serves as a great starting point for exploring the Yucatan Peninsula. From Mérida, you can visit Mayan ruins and museums, haciendas, cenotes, and a wide array of Catholic churches. Mérida was established by Spanish conquistadors in 1542. They overpowered the existing Mayan town, dismantled the pyramids, and used the stones to construct the Cathedral of San Idelfonso. The site of one pyramid is now Mérida's main town square. This town square, or Plaza, is now surrounded by this cathedral, the town hall, the governor's palace, and the Casa de Montejo, the former residence of the conqueror of Yucatan. Take a stroll down Paseo Montejo to admire the restored Spanish and French colonial mansions. Mérida is a fascinating blend of rich culture and history, delicious food, countless cultural activities, and thrilling attractions. Mérida is the cultural heart of the Yucatan and its bustling urban center.

It spans an area of 57,507 km2, accounting for 2.9% of the national territory. Its capital is the city of San Francisco de Campeche. Campeche is a word of Mayan origin, stemming from the roots "can" (snake) and "pech" (tick), translating to "place of snakes and ticks". The name is derived from a statue in this Mayan village that depicted a snake with a tick on its head, at the foot of which human sacrifices were made. When the Spanish conquistadors arrived in Can Pech, they altered the pronunciation and named it Campeche.
